A singular value decomposition approach for detecting and delineating harmful algal blooms in the Red Sea

چکیده
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have adverse effects on marine ecosystems. An effective approach for detecting, monitoring, and eventually predicting the occurrences of such events is required. By combining a singular value decomposition (SVD) satellite remote sensing observations, we propose algorithm to detect delineate species-specific HABs. We implemented tested proposed SVD HABs associated with mixed assemblages different phytoplankton functional type (PFT) groupings in Red Sea. The results were validated concurrent in-situ data from surface samples, demonstrating that SVD-model performs remarkably well at detecting distinguishing HAB species Sea basin. offers cost-effective tool implementing an automated remote-sensing monitoring system Such could be used outbreaks based near real-time measurements, essential support aquaculture industries, desalination plants, tourism, public health.

Harmful algal blooms: Their ecophysiology and general relevance to phytoplankton blooms in the sea
From 60 to 80 species of phytoplankton have been reported to be harmful; of thcsc, 90% are flagellates, notably dinoflagellates. The effects of turbulence on harmful algal bloom (HAB) taxa, their photoadaptive strategies, growth rate, and nutrient uptake aFlinity (K,) are considered. Flagellates, including HAB taxa, collectively have a lower nutrient uptake affinity than diatoms. Four major ada...

متن کاملModels of Harmful Algal Blooms
Models used to study harmful algal blooms are a subset of those used to examine more general planktonic processes. Most models have been heuristic, examining the likelihood of certain processes generating a harmful algal bloom. Several models have been more closely coupled to field data and have been used to gain insights into the dynamics underlying the observations. As better physical and bio...

The world's oceans cover 70 % of the Earth's surface, and their dominant populations, both numerically and biomasswise, belong to microscopic protists and prokaryotes. The marine phytoplanktons are major components of both groups and are, by definition, high dispersal taxa with large population sizes. Small photosynthetic organisms are responsible for the bulk of primary production in oceanic a...

The five most commonly recognized Harmful Algal Bloom related illnesses include Ciguatera poisoning, Paralytic Shellfish poisoning, Neurotoxin Shellfish poisoning, Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning and Amnesic Shellfish poisoning. Although they are each the product of different toxins, toxin assemblages or HAB precursors these clinical syndromes have much in common. Exposure occurs through the cons...
